  Mission Statement

The laboratory safety program’s mission is to provide outstanding professional services to the research community and evaluate risk associated with chemical and mechanical hazards within specific work areas. This is our effort to ensure that the University research community remains in compliance with federal and state regulations while providing a safe working environment for our employees and students.

The goal for the laboratory safety inspection program is to achieve zero non-compliance issues in our inspection reports while assisting to ensure that UGA is one of the safest research communities in the country.


  Services Provided

  • Consultation with laboratory personnel and annual inspection of an estimated 1,500 laboratories
     
  • Annual testing of 808 safety showers and 1010 eyewash stations
  • Spill response consulting
  • Respirator Protection Program (hazard assessment of work area, fit testing, training, record keeping, and consultation on respirator use)
  • Personal Protective Equipment (e.g., training on use, determining what type is best for a particular task)
  • Laboratory safety training, as requested
  • Distribution of safety signs and forms
     
  • Inspection and certification of an estimated 1,100 chemical fume hoods (Contact Mike Stover at (706)369-5706)
